Katie Sturino is the stylish force behind The 12ish Style, a style resource that began in the spring of 2015 designed for girls size 12 to 18 living in a size 2 world. After years of working in the high-fashion world, Katie noticed the lack of fashion role models for fashion forward women with curves like herself and thus The 12ish Style was born.
We sat down one-on-one with Sturino to talk her NYDJ must-haves and how women of any size can find their own confidence through personal style.
1. What was your main source of inspiration behind starting the 12ish Style?
KS:The 12ish Style was born out of my frustration with the larger fashion industry (which don’t get me wrong, I love!). Obviously there are plenty of options for size 0-10 in the retail world but when I am shopping, I often feel like most options are just out of my reach (size-wise). The 12ish Style targets us long overlooked women in the middle — whether you’re a size 10 or 14, or a size 2 to 22, all are welcome! At the end of the day, I want to help women find their confidence.
2. Between blogging for The 12ish Style, being Toast’s “Dogager” and being the wife of an internet celebrity with 6.6 million followers on Instagram, you are certainly no stranger to the world of social media. How do you find time to step away from the digital world and unplug?
KS: The truth is, with so many things on my plate I don’t really have the luxury of unplugging! I like to joke that even on my honeymoon, I was working (which I was). But seriously, I’m very lucky to be passionate about what I do and that makes “being on” 24/7 more manageable. I did recently discover the power of mediation through my friend @thequietmelon and it’s been a game changer. When things get really insane, I take 5 minutes to meditate and feel instantly better. It’s true!
3. How would you describe your personal style?
KS: My style is fun, colorful, a little preppy with a little edge, at times a little kindergarten-ish and always reaching towards being someone who lives in Milan, but never quite getting there.
4. What’s your advice for looking stylish while maintaining a busy lifestyle like yours?
KS: I really don’t believe in sacrificing comfort for style. Whether it’s dressing up a pair of Nike’s with a leather skirt or tossing on a cool sweatshirt instead of a blouse, there are so many comfortable ways to look chic these days. There’s absolutely no reason to suffer!
5. What advice do you have for other “size 12’s living in a size 2 world?”
KS: Not to sound cheesy, but I think it all starts with confidence. I like to joke that it’s the first thing I put on in the morning ;-) But seriously, it’s so important to love yourself and know that you’re good enough (and then some) just the way you are. Beyond that, knowing where to shop and find style inspiration is key and that’s where The 12ish Style comes in!
6. Which size 12ish style icons are you girl crushing on right now?
KS: Oh I love @CandiceHuffine, @AmandaDeCadenet and @Turshen.
7. How did you first discover NYDJ?
KS: I was really struggling to find cute, comfy jeans in my size. When I heard NYDJ makes you look a size smaller of course I had to try (I will try literally anything, after all…). The fit was flattering, comfy and stylish — I knew right away my ongoing denim search was over.
8. We know you love our jeans – which is your favorite style and why?
KS: I have been a loyalist to the Alina legging for years but now, as I am exploring new silhouettes, I have fallen for the Marilyn straight leg in luxury twill because they make a white “jean” with a ton of stretch….so comfortable and supportive.
9. As winter months set in, how does your style shift while trying to remain chic, warm, and comfortable at the same time?
KS: As much as I hate winter, I love a good coat! It can really take your outfit to the next level. I’m obsessed with all the faux fur options this season. And faux fur earmuffs are a great way to stay warm without the hat hair.
10. Where do you see yourself and “The 12ish Style” in 5 years?
KS: The average American woman wears a size 12-14, and yet she’s almost entirely excluded from the fashion landscape. This is insane! Thankfully, the public at large is finally catching on and starting to care, and I think this will help push the industry to a tipping point. My ultimate goal with The 12ish Style is to take part in shaping this evolution. In 5 years, if The 12ish Style is designing capsule collections with brands that aren’t even looking above a size 10 current day, that will be true success (and better shopping for all!)! I hope we can always be a resource for women of all shapes to come and find style and their own personal confidence.
